BABY ON BOARD... BABY ON THE ROAD! 31 May 2021

In Greece, traffic accidents are the leading cause of death in children and adolescents.

Do you know that… a hug can kill?

  • Our weight varies depending on the speed of a plausible collision!
  • In a collision with a speed of 30 km/ h, our weight turns out to be 20 times heavier, while with 50 km/h we become 40 times heavier. That is, a child of 15 kg in an accident with 50km / h weighs about 600 kg, while an adult of 75 kg weighs about 3 tons!!!

This means that if you hold a child in your arms, in the event of a collision it will get out of your hands and it is impossible to hold it. It will then collide with the seat, windshield or other occupants with often devastating consequences.

  • Both the car seat belt and the airbag are designed for people over 12 years or 1.50 m tall. Otherwise, their use is dangerous.
  • Children under the age of five are not allowed to commute on motorcycles unless transported in a special seat. In any case, the use of the right helmet is essential.
  • The interior of a car parked in the sun takes less than 15 minutes to develop life-threatening temperatures. Half-open windows do not improve the situation. Do not leave children alone in the car even for a while!

Children's seat

Children must always be tied to the special car seat, even when traveling short distances!

According to Greek Law 2696/1999, Article 33, it is prohibited for children under the age of twelve (12) to occupy a position next to the driver, as long as they are not restrained with an approved restraint system suitable for their age, height and weight.

  • Until the age of 12 or until they reach 1.5 m. height must sit in the special seat. Until then, the seat belt is dangerous for their body type.
  • Infants up to 15 months old should be placed in special rear-facing seats. Never place the child seat in the front passenger seat without first disengaging the airbag. The rear seat is the safest part of the car for all children of all ages.
  • In fact, until the age of four, they must sit in the opposite direction of the car movement! The child seat is the only one that offers them the appropriate support in case of an accident, but also the necessary comfort in their travels. In addition, it is advisable to use the ISOFIX system over the seat belt, as it has been shown that 70% of seat belts are incorrectly mounted and therefore ineffective.
  • The seat belt should be about two inches above the child's shoulder, and the seat should not move more than two inches left or right. During a trip, we must not loosen our seat belts, not even temporarily, and do not take the child out of the child seat for any reason. If he or she cries, we make sure to stop the car

We always make sure that the seat we choose is approved by ECE-R 44 or ECE-R 129. The categories of child seats according to the standard ECE-R 44 refer to the weight of the child.

The main categories are as follows:

  • Class 0: For weight up to 10 kg or by an age approach 6-9 months old
  • Class 0+: For weight up to 13 kg or by an age approach 12-15 months old
  • Class 1: For weight from 9 to 18 kg or by an age approach 9 months up to 4 years old
  • Class 2: For weight from 15 to 25 kg or by an age approach 4-6 years old
  • Class 3: For weight from 22 to 36 kg or by an age approach 6-11 years old

It is recommended to change the seat category when the child has exhausted the weight limit of the previous category, as well as when the child's head exceeds the back of the child seat.

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for mounting the seat.

We must always deactivate the front airbag if we have placed the O + group child seat (baby seat) next to the driver.

We do not expose our child to unnecessary risk by carrying in our hug inside the car, in a Moses basket or in a baby carrier.

Child - driver

• Every year 2,500 people are killed in road accidents, while 4,000 are seriously injured and 30,000 slightly injured! So, 1/3 of them are children!

• The use of a helmet and seat belt leads to a 20% reduction in injuries, while the correct use of child seats leads to a 70% reduction. Do not neglect to secure your children in their car seat!

• The car must have a fire extinguisher, a pharmacy box, an iridescent triangle and a reflective vest easily accessible. In the event of a car damage, make sure that children stand in such a way that they are protected from passing vehicles.
